The Most Common Security Mistakes Irish Homeowners Make

November 25, 2024

We all want to feel safe in our homes. It is meant to be a place that we feel completely comfortable in, where we can unwind and relax without the worries of the outside world interfering. Home security is unique to every household and homeowner, with different needs and security issues. If you live alone, you might have a different definition of security than if you have a young child in the home. Home security is very important whichever way you look at it though.

Despite this, there are some common mistakes that make our homes vulnerable to potential criminals and intrusion, whether we are at home during the night or away from home during the day. Here are just some of the most common security mistakes that Irish homeowners make, and how to fix them, including installing the very best home security systems to give you peace of mind that your home is looked after at all times.

Mistake No. 1 – A complicated home security system

One of the first mistakes that Irish homeowners make is that they install a home security system that is complicated to install and use. You want your home to be as secure as possible, of course, but this doesn’t mean that you need to turn it into an impenetrable fortress that is hard for even you and your family to enter. The best home security systems provide an optimal level of security, but they are simple to use for those living in the home. This makes it easy to leave and to enter without compromising the security system.

Mistake No. 2 – Giving criminals easy entry

Another common mistake that people make with their home security is that they leave windows and doors open, or leave keys under the front door mat, plant pot, or in other easily accessible locations. A burglar in your neighbourhood is likely to be opportunistic, rather than specifically targeting your home. If you have left windows open when you are away from the home, or have been careless in allowing outsiders see where you leave a spare key, this makes your home vulnerable to potential threat.

Mistake No. 3 – Not changing the locks when you move in

When you first move into a new home it is important that you get new locks installed and keys cut. You never know how many copies of the keys have been made by previous owners, who may have also provided keys to family members and friends, or contractors in the past. To make sure that it is only you and your family who have access to your home, a brand-new set of keys goes a long way to keeping you safe in the family home.

Mistake No. 4 – Going it alone

Installing a monitored home alarm system is a fantastic choice for homeowners as it provides that extra layer of security support. This takes the pressure off you to be the sole person in charge of your home security, as the home alarm is professionally monitored remotely and will notify key holders, and in some cases, the emergency services, should a break-in, fire, or other type of emergency be detected on the system. You’ll have access to a simple and intuitive app that allows you to arm and disarm your system from any location, receive real-time notifications and live video and playback should you have security cameras installed on your property.

Mistake No. 5 – No outdoor surveillance or deterrent

If you are serious about your home security, you should consider how to look after the exterior of your property. Installing outdoor cameras and linking that to your overall home security system is one way to have immediate access to view what is going on outside your home. Whether you are in bed at night and want to check what that noise was outside, or you are away from home and want to see if everything is fine at home, cameras provide you with a clear and immediate view of everything. Motion sensor lighting is another way you can add a deterrent to criminals, as they brightly illuminate a space when a person walks close enough to your home. Place these in the vulnerable locations around your house for maximum security.

As you can see, there are some common mistakes to avoid (Infographic) that we can offer a solution for in the form of a comprehensive home security system that looks after your home and provides you with the ultimate peace of mind. It is important that you never take shortcuts where your safety is concerned. Ensuring that your home is well looked after in terms of security and little habits and other aspects that can sometimes be overlooked, is an important aspect of owning a home.
